
The Rise of Transhumanism: TikTok Brain, Ego, and the Death of the Human Being
Technology was supposed to expand the human experience. It promised unlimited knowledge, instant communication, greater creativity, and freedom from the tedious limitations of the physical world. Instead, something darker is beginning to emerge. The modern person has access to more information than any civilization in history, yet often possesses less attention, less patience, less certainty, and less meaningful connection. We can communicate with almost anyone on Earth, but increasingly struggle to hold a conversation across a dinner table. We have never been more visible, yet millions of people feel profoundly unseen.
This is the rise of transhumanism—not only as the futuristic movement that imagines merging human beings with machines, but as a psychological and cultural transformation already taking place. We do not need computer chips implanted in our brains to become dependent on machines. That dependency arrived through the glowing rectangle we carry everywhere, the algorithms shaping what we notice, the social platforms defining how we present ourselves, and the artificial intelligence systems increasingly being asked to think, write, remember, advise, and even feel on our behalf.
The death of the human being does not necessarily mean the physical extinction of humanity. It means the gradual disappearance of the qualities that make human life recognizably human: sustained attention, independent thought, embodied experience, emotional resilience, authentic identity, intimate relationships, earned wisdom, and participation in a shared reality.
What Is Transhumanism?
Traditional transhumanism is an intellectual and technological movement devoted to overcoming human limitations through science. Its advocates imagine genetic engineering, neural interfaces, artificial organs, radical life extension, cybernetic enhancement, and perhaps the eventual merging of human consciousness with machines. In its most optimistic form, transhumanism promises freedom from disease, disability, aging, and biological limitation.
There is nothing inherently sinister about using technology to improve human life. Medicine already replaces joints, regulates heart rhythms, restores hearing, and allows people to survive conditions that would once have been fatal. Artificial intelligence can accelerate research, increase accessibility, democratize knowledge, and amplify human creativity. The problem begins when technology stops serving human development and begins replacing it.
A quieter form of transhumanism is already unfolding without implants, laboratories, or science-fiction machinery. The smartphone has become an external memory. Search engines have become external recall. GPS has become external spatial awareness. Social media has become external identity. Algorithms have become external curiosity. AI is rapidly becoming external reasoning. One human capacity after another is being transferred from the person to the machine.
The result is not yet a superhuman being. It may be something closer to a technologically extended but psychologically diminished human—more connected to information, yet less capable of making sense of it; more powerful in theory, yet more dependent in practice.
TikTok Brain and the Fragmentation of Attention
“TikTok brain” is not a clinical diagnosis. It is a cultural description of attention conditioned by rapid novelty, endless scrolling, emotional stimulation, and algorithmically selected rewards. The problem is larger than TikTok itself. Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and nearly every major platform now operate according to the same basic formula: immediate stimulation, minimal commitment, constant variety and no natural stopping point.
These systems do not merely deliver content. They train behavior. Each swipe teaches the mind that boredom can be escaped instantly, discomfort need not be tolerated, and anything that fails to entertain within seconds can be discarded. A book, conversation, lecture, relationship or difficult problem begins to feel unbearably slow when compared with an endless stream of compressed novelty.
Research is still developing, and it would be irresponsible to claim that short-form video permanently “destroys” the brain. The available evidence nevertheless gives legitimate reason for concern. A 2026 study published in npj Science of Learning found that fragmented learning through short videos impaired memory by disrupting processes involved in integrating information into a coherent structure. Other recent research has associated problematic short-form video consumption with attentional impulsivity, learning difficulties and academic burnout, although association alone does not prove that the platforms caused every observed problem. The deeper danger is the loss of continuity. Human understanding requires time. Ideas must be held in the mind long enough to connect with other ideas. Emotions must be experienced long enough to be understood. Relationships must survive moments that are not immediately gratifying. Wisdom cannot be absorbed in fifteen-second fragments because wisdom depends on context, contradiction, memory and reflection.
When the mind becomes accustomed to constant interruption, knowledge is encountered as disconnected pieces rather than as a coherent view of reality. A person may consume hundreds of opinions every day while developing very few ideas that are genuinely their own.
The Algorithmic Construction of Reality
Previous generations watched the same evening news, read overlapping newspapers and inhabited a comparatively limited information environment. That world had serious flaws, but it gave society at least some shared reference points. Today, two people living in the same home can inhabit radically different realities because their feeds have learned to show them different versions of the world.
Algorithms are not primarily designed to reveal truth. They are designed to predict what will keep a person watching, clicking, reacting and returning. Content that provokes outrage, fear, envy, desire or tribal loyalty often performs better than information that is measured, complicated or emotionally neutral. The result is an information environment that can reward certainty over curiosity and confrontation over understanding.
The algorithm gradually becomes a psychological mirror. It observes what a person pauses on and supplies more of it. Interest becomes repetition, repetition becomes reinforcement, and reinforcement can eventually feel like reality itself. Someone who watches suspicious content may be shown an increasingly suspicious world. Someone who engages with rage may be surrounded by reasons to remain angry. Someone consumed by appearance may be placed inside an endless beauty contest.
This is more than media personalization. It is the industrial production of individual reality. Once people lose a common factual foundation, disagreement becomes nearly impossible to resolve. Every opposing position looks not merely mistaken, but insane, dishonest or dangerous.
The Rise of the Digital Ego
Social media did not invent ego, vanity or status competition. Human beings have always wanted recognition. What social media changed was the scale, speed and permanence of the performance. Identity is now displayed before an invisible audience and measured through followers, likes, comments, views, shares and verification symbols.
The individual becomes both the product and its marketing department. Meals, vacations, relationships, spiritual experiences, political beliefs, bodies and personal struggles can all be transformed into content. Life is no longer simply lived; it is observed internally as possible material for public presentation.
This produces a strange contradiction. People are encouraged to “be authentic,” but only within an environment that immediately scores the performance of that authenticity. The self becomes increasingly curated while the need for validation becomes increasingly urgent. Confidence is no longer built entirely through competence, contribution or relationships. It can be simulated through visibility.
Much of what appears online as excessive confidence may therefore be a form of defensive insecurity. Grandiosity protects a frightened identity. Moral superiority protects a person from uncertainty. Constant self-promotion protects against the fear of insignificance. Hostility toward criticism protects a self that has become too fragile to tolerate contradiction.
The digital ego must remain visible because silence feels like disappearance. It must remain correct because changing one’s mind can be interpreted as weakness. It must remain exceptional because ordinary life does not perform well in a marketplace built around attention.
AI and the Outsourcing of the Mind
Artificial intelligence introduces a new stage in this transformation. Social media competed for human attention; AI can now participate directly in human thought. It can summarize books, produce arguments, compose messages, generate images, advise on relationships, imitate empathy and answer questions before the user has fully considered them.
Used deliberately, AI can be an extraordinary intellectual instrument. It can help someone explore unfamiliar subjects, overcome communication barriers, test ideas and perform work that would otherwise consume enormous amounts of time. Used habitually and without resistance, however, it can become an escape from the effort through which intelligence is developed.
Writing is not merely the transcription of thoughts that already exist. The struggle to write often creates the thought. Remembering is not merely information retrieval; it strengthens connections and constructs identity. Solving a problem is not wasted time before obtaining an answer; it is how judgment and competence are formed.
When a machine performs every difficult cognitive task, the immediate product may improve while the person’s underlying ability fails to develop. We risk producing people who can generate sophisticated language without possessing sophisticated understanding, present arguments they cannot defend, and project competence they have never earned through experience.
There is also an emotional risk. AI companions can be patient, available and agreeable in ways that human beings cannot. A machine does not become tired, need reciprocity or arrive with its own independent life. That convenience may be comforting, but genuine relationships are built partly through inconvenience. Human intimacy requires compromise, misunderstanding, accountability, forgiveness and the recognition that another person does not exist solely to satisfy our emotional needs.
According to Pew Research Center, 64 percent of American teenagers reported using AI chatbots in 2025, with approximately three in ten using them daily. These figures do not prove that AI is replacing human relationships, but they show how quickly the technology is entering areas once reserved for teachers, friends, family members, counselors and private reflection. The Mental Health Crisis Behind the Screen
Technology cannot be blamed for every mental-health problem affecting younger generations. Economic insecurity, family instability, academic pressure, violence, social inequality, global crises and reduced confidence in institutions all contribute to the current atmosphere. Social media can also provide community, education and support, particularly for isolated people who cannot find understanding in their immediate surroundings.
Yet the scale of exposure is impossible to dismiss. The U.S. Surgeon General has reported that up to 95 percent of adolescents use social media and that more than one-third describe their use as almost constant. The advisory concludes that the evidence is not sufficient to declare social media safe for children and adolescents. It also reports that young people spending more than three hours a day on social media face twice the risk of mental-health problems such as symptoms of anxiety and depression, while carefully acknowledging that the relationship is complex and not identical for every user. A screen-centered life can combine many recognized threats to well-being in a single device: social comparison, disrupted sleep, harassment, frightening information, sexualized imagery, compulsive behavior, status anxiety and the constant possibility of public rejection. There is no closing time. The social world follows the child into the bedroom.
The crisis may not be solely a matter of what people see online, but what online life displaces. Time spent scrolling is time not spent sleeping, moving, creating, exploring nature, developing a practical skill or sitting face to face with another person. The most important cost of technology may be the life that does not happen while we are using it.
Distrust as a Rational Response That Becomes a Prison
Younger generations did not invent distrust without reason. They have watched governments contradict themselves, corporations harvest personal data, institutions conceal misconduct, influencers disguise advertising as authenticity, and edited content circulate as reality. They have inherited economic systems in which housing, education and basic stability can feel increasingly inaccessible. Skepticism is not merely a personality defect; it is often an understandable response to repeated institutional failure.
The danger appears when skepticism becomes absolute suspicion. If every institution is corrupt, every expert is compromised, every relationship is transactional and every disagreement is evidence of malice, trust becomes impossible. Without trust, there can be no lasting intimacy, functioning community or collective action.
Algorithmic culture intensifies this condition because distrust is highly engaging. Suspicion creates endless content. Every event can be reframed as evidence of manipulation, every omission as proof of conspiracy and every correction as part of the cover-up. Healthy doubt asks for evidence. Unhealthy distrust rejects the possibility that evidence, cooperation or good faith can exist at all.
A civilization cannot survive entirely on exposure, accusation and defensive vigilance. Human beings need discernment, but they also need the ability to risk carefully earned trust.
Convenience Is Removing the Friction That Forms Us
Modern technology promises a frictionless existence: instant food, instant entertainment, instant answers, instant approval and instant escape from discomfort. But human character is largely formed through friction. Patience develops by waiting. Confidence develops by confronting uncertainty. Competence develops through failure. Empathy develops by remaining present with someone whose needs interrupt our own.
If every uncomfortable moment can be avoided, the capacity to endure discomfort remains immature. Boredom feels intolerable. Criticism feels abusive. Disagreement feels threatening. Delayed gratification feels impossible. Ordinary relationships feel inadequate because they cannot compete with digital systems optimized to produce immediate stimulation.
This does not mean suffering is inherently noble or that technology should make life unnecessarily difficult. It means there is a difference between eliminating pointless hardship and eliminating every developmental challenge. A culture that removes all resistance may also remove the conditions under which resilient people are formed.
The Feedback Loop Consuming Human Life
The crisis can be understood as a self-reinforcing cycle. Disconnection creates insecurity. Insecurity inflates the ego. The inflated ego interprets disagreement as a threat. That defensiveness increases distrust and drives further isolation. Technology then offers artificial connection, stimulation and validation, temporarily relieving the condition it helped intensify.
The lonely person scrolls to feel connected and encounters images that deepen inadequacy. The insecure person performs confidence and becomes dependent on the audience’s response. The distrustful person searches for certainty and is given increasingly extreme material. The overwhelmed person asks AI to think and communicate on their behalf, gradually losing confidence in doing either alone.
The system does not need to make users happy. It needs to keep them engaged. A person who is calm, secure, connected and capable of putting the device down is less economically valuable than someone caught in a continuous cycle of anxiety and relief.
The Death of the Human Being
The phrase “death of the human being” should not be interpreted as a prediction that machines will physically eliminate humanity. The more immediate possibility is spiritual, psychological and cultural death: human beings remaining biologically alive while surrendering the capacities that make life meaningful.
A person can have thousands of connections without companionship, unlimited information without wisdom, endless entertainment without joy, constant validation without self-respect and AI-generated answers without understanding. The outer architecture of life remains, but its interior substance begins to disappear.
The machine does not need to conquer humanity if humanity voluntarily reorganizes itself around the machine. It only needs us to prefer simulation to experience, convenience to competence, performance to identity and artificial affirmation to difficult human love.
Reclaiming Humanity in the Age of AI
The answer is not technological panic, nostalgia or condemnation of an entire generation. Younger people did not design the attention economy into which they were born. They are navigating systems built by some of the most powerful corporations and sophisticated behavioral engineers in history. Blaming them personally ignores the industrial forces competing for their attention from childhood.
Nor is the answer to reject artificial intelligence. AI will remain part of education, business, medicine, art and daily life. The essential question is whether it expands human agency or replaces it. A tool should leave the user more capable, not merely more dependent.
Reclaiming humanity begins with restoring experiences that cannot be reduced to content: uninterrupted conversation, physical work, silence, nature, exercise, creative struggle, spiritual contemplation, community responsibility and relationships that require reciprocity. It means allowing children to become bored, letting adults remain uncertain long enough to think, and using AI after engaging the mind rather than before it.
Human beings must once again practice attention as a form of sovereignty. We must choose when to be reachable, decide which thoughts deserve sustained consideration, and recognize that not every experience requires an audience. Privacy, boredom and silence are not empty spaces. They are environments in which the self can exist without being measured.
The rise of transhumanism is not simply a future debate about microchips, robotics or immortality. It is the present struggle over whether technology will remain an extension of humanity or whether humanity will become an extension of technology. The defining battle of the AI age may not be between human beings and machines. It may be between the part of us that seeks effortless simulation and the part that still longs to be fully alive.
