Instead of the noise and chaos of the terminal, you’re welcomed into a beautifully designed space where you can enjoy chef-prepared meals, premium cocktails, comfortable seating, lightning-fast Wi-Fi, and an atmosphere that actually makes you want to arrive at the airport early. After visiting Centurion Lounges across the country, I can confidently say they’re one of the biggest reasons I continue carrying an American Express Platinum Card.

If you’ve been wondering whether the American Express Centurion Lounge is worth the hype, this guide covers everything you need to know, from how to qualify and where to find them to what you can eat, drink, and enjoy once you’re inside.

What Is the American Express Centurion Lounge?

The American Express Centurion Lounge is American Express’s premium airport lounge network, created exclusively for eligible cardmembers. While many airport lounges feel like little more than waiting rooms with free coffee, Centurion Lounges were designed to feel like luxury hotels tucked inside busy airports.

Every location has its own personality, often inspired by the city it’s located in, but they all share the same goal of making travel far more enjoyable. From the lighting and architecture to the artwork and furniture, every detail feels intentional. It doesn’t feel like you’re waiting for a flight. It feels like you’re beginning your vacation before you’ve even boarded the plane.

For frequent travelers, that’s a huge difference.

Why the American Express Centurion Lounge Is Worth Visiting

Travel can be exhausting. Delays happen. Flights get canceled. Connections get missed. Spending hours in crowded terminals only adds to the stress.

That’s why I actually look forward to arriving at the airport early now.

Walking into the American Express Centurion Lounge feels like stepping into a luxury hotel lobby instead of an airport terminal. The atmosphere is calm, conversations stay relatively quiet, the seating is genuinely comfortable, and there’s enough room to spread out and relax instead of fighting for an outlet near the gate.

Whether I need to catch up on emails, edit photos from a recent trip, enjoy a good meal, or simply unwind with a drink before boarding, the lounge has become part of the journey rather than just a place to kill time.

American Express Centurion Lounge Locations

One of the biggest strengths of the American Express Centurion Lounge network is that it continues to expand every year. Today you’ll find lounges in many of the busiest airports throughout the United States, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Las Vegas, Denver, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami, Houston, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New York, and Washington, D.C.

International travelers can also enjoy Centurion Lounges in destinations like London Heathrow, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Sydney, Melbourne, Delhi, Mumbai, and Tokyo.

Each location has its own personality. Some feature rooftop terraces overlooking the runway while others include spa-inspired shower suites or beautifully designed cocktail bars. Visiting different lounges has almost become part of the adventure whenever I travel.

The Food Is Surprisingly Good

Let’s be honest. Airport food usually isn’t something you look forward to.

The American Express Centurion Lounge completely changes that expectation.

One of the first things I noticed during my first visit was that the food actually tasted like it came from a quality restaurant rather than an airport buffet. American Express partners with well-known chefs who create menus inspired by the local region, so every lounge offers something a little different.

Breakfast often includes fresh eggs, pastries, fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, breakfast potatoes, and artisan breads. Later in the day you’ll usually find rotating selections of freshly prepared meats, seafood, seasonal vegetables, pasta dishes, salads, vegetarian options, and desserts that honestly rival many restaurants outside the airport.

The menu changes throughout the year, which keeps things interesting for frequent flyers.

Premium Drinks Are Included

Another reason travelers love the American Express Centurion Lounge is the complimentary beverage program.

Instead of paying airport prices for a drink before your flight, you can enjoy premium cocktails crafted by respected mixologists, regional craft beers, quality wines, espresso drinks, fresh coffee, specialty teas, sparkling water, juices, and soft drinks.

One of my favorite traditions before a flight is grabbing a signature cocktail, finding a comfortable chair overlooking the runway, and simply slowing down for a while before boarding begins.

It makes the entire travel day feel less rushed.

Amenities That Make Traveling Better

The American Express Centurion Lounge isn’t just about food and drinks. It’s about creating an environment where travelers can actually recharge.

If you’ve been on a long international flight or have an extended layover, the shower suites are a game changer. Fresh towels, premium toiletries, and a private space to freshen up before your next flight can make you feel like an entirely different person.

Reliable high-speed Wi-Fi makes it easy to finish work, upload travel photos, or stream entertainment without constantly searching for a stronger signal.

The seating is another standout feature. Instead of rows of stiff airport chairs, you’ll find plush lounge seating, quiet corners for reading, communal work tables, charging stations, and thoughtfully designed spaces that accommodate both business travelers and vacationers.

Families traveling with children will also appreciate the dedicated family areas available in many locations, giving parents a more relaxed environment while waiting for their flight.

How to Access the American Express Centurion Lounge

The easiest way to access the American Express Centurion Lounge is by carrying an eligible American Express card.

Most travelers gain entry through the American Express Platinum Card or the Business Platinum Card. Centurion Card members naturally receive access as well, and certain Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card holders can also enter when flying Delta under American Express’s access policies.

To enter, you’ll generally need your eligible American Express card, a valid government-issued photo ID, and a same-day boarding pass. American Express typically allows access beginning three hours before your scheduled departure, although connecting passengers have additional flexibility.

Because the lounges have become increasingly popular, arriving a little earlier in the day often provides the best experience before peak travel times.

American Express Platinum and Lounge Access

For many travelers, the American Express Platinum Card is worth considering almost entirely because of the lounge benefits.

The card includes access to the American Express Centurion Lounge, but that’s only the beginning.

Cardmembers also receive access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection, which includes thousands of airport lounges around the world through partnerships with Plaza Premium, Escape Lounges, Delta Sky Club on eligible itineraries, and Priority Pass Select after enrollment.

When you travel regularly, it’s hard to overstate how valuable this becomes. Having a comfortable place to relax almost anywhere you fly changes the entire experience.

Does Priority Pass Get You Into the American Express Centurion Lounge?

This is one of the most common questions people ask, and the answer surprises many travelers.

Priority Pass by itself does not provide access to the American Express Centurion Lounge.

However, if you carry the American Express Platinum Card, you’ll typically receive Priority Pass Select membership in addition to Centurion Lounge access. That means you’re getting two separate benefits rather than one replacing the other.

It’s an important distinction because it significantly expands the number of airport lounges available to you throughout the world.

Is the Annual Fee Worth It?

The American Express Platinum Card certainly isn’t inexpensive, but whether it’s worth the cost depends entirely on how often you travel.

For someone who only flies once every few years, the value may be difficult to justify.

For frequent travelers, however, the math changes quickly.

When you consider how much airport meals, cocktails, coffee, Wi-Fi, bottled water, and comfortable workspaces normally cost, the value of the American Express Centurion Lounge alone can add up surprisingly fast over the course of a year.

Add in hotel benefits, travel protections, airline credits, Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credits, and the broader Global Lounge Collection, and many travelers find the card pays for itself through regular use.

My Favorite Part of the Experience

Every traveler has their own favorite feature, but mine is simple.

It’s the feeling.

Instead of beginning a trip stressed, rushed, and surrounded by crowds, I start each journey relaxed, well-fed, and already enjoying the experience.

Sometimes I’ll answer emails while enjoying breakfast. Other times I’ll edit travel photos with an espresso in hand. If I’m traveling for vacation, I’ll often celebrate the beginning of the trip with one of the lounge’s signature cocktails while watching airplanes taxi outside the window.

Those moments may seem small, but they completely change the rhythm of traveling.

Frequently Asked Questions

One question I hear often is whether the food is really free. It is. Once you’re inside the American Express Centurion Lounge, the meals, snacks, desserts, coffee, soft drinks, beer, wine, and most cocktails are included with your eligible access.

Another common question is whether anyone can simply purchase a day pass. At this time, American Express generally does not sell day passes, making access an exclusive benefit reserved for eligible cardmembers and qualifying guests.

Guest policies have changed over the years to help reduce overcrowding, so it’s always a good idea to review the latest rules before traveling. Depending on your card and annual spending, guest fees or complimentary guest privileges may apply.

Final Thoughts

The American Express Centurion Lounge has completely redefined what airport travel can feel like. Instead of viewing the airport as something to endure, I’ve started seeing it as part of the overall travel experience. Great food, handcrafted cocktails, beautiful design, comfortable seating, reliable Wi-Fi, and thoughtful amenities transform what used to be wasted time into one of the most enjoyable parts of the journey.

If you travel even a handful of times each year, having access to the American Express Centurion Lounge can make every trip more comfortable, more productive, and significantly less stressful. Combined with the American Express Platinum Card and the broader Global Lounge Collection, it’s one of the strongest travel benefits available today.

Once you’ve experienced a Centurion Lounge, it’s surprisingly difficult to go back to waiting at the gate.
